What is moa nalo?

Moa nalo is a now-extinct species of flightless bird that lived in Hawaii. It was a member of the rail family, and grew to about three feet tall. Moa nalo lived on the islands for thousands of years, but went extinct around 500 years ago, likely due to habitat loss and predation by humans and introduced animals. The bird's name translates to "lost fowl" in Hawaiian.
